Inside Athena: Glastonbury Maintenance Director Helping and Bonding With Residents
GLASTONBURY, C.T. — Brandon Lee loves his job at Glastonbury Health Care Center because of the residents he interacts with each day.
The Maintenance Director is responsible for anything with mechanics in the building as well as repairs and upkeep. His day could range from painting to checking water temperatures to making sure resident equipment is functioning properly. They also work with numerous vendors each day to support the building operations.
“It’s very important to have knowledgeable maintenance people because, if you don’t know how to properly diagnose something, that resident could be stuck in the bed for hours and it could make it very difficult to go to the bathroom, to eat,” he said, referring to a resident bed being able to move up and down as needed.
Lee held the same role at another nursing home for nine years before coming to Glastonbury Health Care Center in September 2022. Before entering healthcare, he worked in maintenance with apartments but was looking for a change of industry.
“Usually when you’re doing apartment maintenance, nobody’s really appreciative of you doing anything because you’re only in there when nobody’s there. At least you get to go into a resident’s room, they’re there. You get to talk to them and they’re super appreciative of what you’re doing,” he said.
Lee also is no stranger when it comes to caring for others. At a previous job, he also worked as a C.N.A, but found his passion lies in the maintenance and physical plant work.
“[In this job], you really start getting attached to the residents,” he said.
The residents excite him to come into the center each day. That and his maintenance assistant Paul Crean who Lee calls “amazing,” noting his years of service at the building.
“The way that [the residents are] appreciative of what you do it makes you think about all the things that they don’t see that goes on behind the scenes,” he said. “To them, it seems like a huge task but we do it every day so it just seems like a normal thing to do.”
“Brandon is a knowledgeable Maintenance Director and is dedicated to ensuring the safety and welfare of the residents at Glastonbury Health Care Center. As a member of the management team, Brandon is personable, engaging and committed to the success of the center,” Administrator Patrick McDonnell said.
